How to compare team form across leagues and cups

A team does not start from zero when it enters another competition. Earlier matches can provide context when their scope and weighting are explicit.

Use the same team and statistic

Identify the actual team, not just a similar name. Clubs in different countries may share names. Compare shots on target with shots on target, rather than substituting goals or total shots.

A Cuotario team profile keeps the competition in its URL. The next-match model may use an expanded basis for enabled markets; these are different views.

Compare production and concession

Illustrative example: one team records 4, 6 and 5 shots on target; its opponent concedes 3, 7 and 5 in three other matches. Both averages are 5, but those six records are not six observations of a single team and do not predict exactly five attempts.

Check earlier opponents, venue and variability before transferring a pattern to a different competition.

Use an explicit expansion rule

The enabled expanded basis uses official club matches before the cutoff day, within a maximum 180-day window and the current season or phase of each competition. It excludes friendlies, national teams, partial statistics and matches identified as involving extra time or penalties.

Expansion is enabled by competition and market. Champions League total shots retain the earlier basis while other enabled team markets use the expanded one.

Distinguish counts from weights

The model’s time weighting halves every 90 days, and another competition receives a factor of 0.70. Where coverage permits, similarity in pre-match favoritism and the reference lineup also influences the weights.

Ten recorded matches therefore need not equal ten effective observations. Unweighted public averages are descriptive and do not reproduce the model projection.

Review rotations and evaluate uncertainty

A club may rotate its lineup between competitions. Check the status and timestamp of lineup information. A possible starting eleven or a doubtful player is not a confirmation.

A broader sample improves coverage without guaranteeing accuracy or a profitable edge. Evaluation requires predictions saved before matches and compared with later outcomes.
