Football card statistics: yellow cards, red cards and samples

Check what the market counts: yellow cards, red cards, total cards or booking points. These measures are not interchangeable.

Cards and booking points

IFAB Law 12 distinguishes cautions and sending-off offences. Operators may assign different point values to each event or treat a second yellow differently. Check whether substitutes, staff or events after the final whistle are included.

Cuotario’s recorded card metric adds the available yellow- and red-card counts. It is not an automatic conversion into an operator’s booking-points system.

Keep each team separate

Two yellow cards for the home team and three for the away team produce five yellows overall. The home-team figure and the match total answer different questions.

Illustrative example: over 1.5 cards for a team requires at least two qualifying cards under the applicable rules. That is not necessarily equivalent to over 1.5 booking points.

Fouls are not automatically cards

Not every foul receives a caution. Cards can also result from dissent, time-wasting or other conduct. A foul count provides context but does not determine the card total.

The referee, match situation and player roles can matter. Do not assume a model incorporates information that it does not explicitly declare using.

Check the denominator

Review how many matches contain usable card data and which period they cover. A small sample may be dominated by a single sending-off. A missing red-card count must not silently become zero.

Enabled segments combine official club competitions within their current season or phase and a maximum 180-day window. Other segments retain their existing competition-specific basis.

Compare the available evidence

Choose a league, open a match and compare home-team, away-team and total-card markets separately. Review the sample and projection for each one.

For individual players, check participation and the market definition. A minimum-odds threshold does not establish profitability or guarantee a correct prediction.
